Tony Sparber shares insights on weight loss camps

A press release was broadcast this morning from Maximum Exposure PR. The release features insights on weight loss from Tony Sparber, founder of Camp Pocono Trails summer weight loss camp.

Overweight kids and teens are dealing with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, low self esteem, and bullying in addition to dealing with their weight issues.

If this sounds familiar, Sparber suggests urging the child to attend a camp where they can get in shape, meet like-minded friends their own age, and most of all, have a good time.

“A fun, well-rounded environment is the best type of camp,” Sparber says.

Teen Keeps Losing after Weight Loss Camp

Long Island high school student, Nicole Caroll, lost over 40 lbs. at a weight loss camp last summer and continues to make progress toward her ultimate goal. Playing goalie for the Bayside High School soccer team, Nicole’s increased energy, improved self esteem, and reduced cholesterol is due to hard work and a healthy attitude and is apparent in all aspects of her life. Her family, coach, and teammates all say she is an inspiration.

Nicole’s story is just one of many success stories from kids and teens that start losing weight at a summer fitness camp and continue to meet their long term goals at home. At Camp Pocono Trails, our goal is to have fun, lose weight, and gain self esteem to positively influence lifetime attitudes about health.

Weight Loss for Kids – The Best and Worst Environments

Childhood obesity is a serious problem because as parents try to figure out how to get their overweight son or daughter to lose weight, they often find dieting and enforcing a vigorous fitness routine doesn’t work well if at all. One sad trend is that despite knowing the health consequences of being overweight, children are still eating unhealthy foods and becoming less and less active as technology is readily available.

Many factors are influencing the trend of children becoming overweight in the US. One factor parents should definitely consider is how the social environment can be a negative or positive place of reinforcing healthy eating habits and being fit. For example, one might look at how the fact that many public schools are poorly funded and receive offers from vending machine companies to get thousands of dollars in exchange for placing their machines in the schools.

These machines often carry high calorie and nutrient deficient foods (or junk foods as we all know it), and because they are fast to eat and sweet tasting, many kids fall victim to consuming them daily. While some might argue that it is a personal decision whether or not to consume these foods, one must recall the fact that children and teenagers are still growing and often incapable of making the right decision all the time. This inability to often make the right decision for oneself, is why parents must consider how even the school environment can be a negative place for healthy eating habits.

In nutrition, vending machines serve as an especially dangerous exposure for children for many reasons. Everything in this country is fast paced. For example, many schools have a very short lunch break which leaves children just enough time to properly eat a healthy lunch and have time leftover to socialize through play or other means. This is a huge temptation for our kids because they will likely desire to quickly fill up on high calorie foods and sugary beverages so they can go outside and play or socialize with friends.

So, for as long as obesity trends are becoming worse and children must attend school, it is up to parents to try to structure their environment as much as possible so as to leave little room for them to give into their temptation. A positive environment for a child would be surrounding them with people who are all having fun by being active naturally. A summer fitness camp for kids fits this description perfectly because as a positive environment, it will reinforce being active as a natural way to have fun. At the same time it will also provide your child with a structure that prevents them from consuming junk food on a regular basis. They will be having too much fun to think about eating junk food!

Whether it happens at our summer weight loss camps or do it at home, we strongly believe that fun is a core element to achieving fitness goals of kids and teens.

Weight Loss for Kids: 5 Tips for Motivation

Mindset can make or break a weight loss program.  That’s why the most successful weight loss camps make the self-esteem of their campers a priority, as is evidenced by watching any given episode of the popular MTV series “Fat Camp.” But making overweight kids feel good about themselves can be a challenge, as many are stuck in a cycle of low self worth because of poor treatment by peers and unrealistic media images. Here are some popular motivational techniques we use that you can apply to your own life.

1. Track Your Progress

We track the weight of all of its campers, usually doing a weigh-in on a weekly basis.  This gives kids a chance to see how much progress they have made week by week.  Seeing that it is possible to consistently lose weight while having fun and eating good food encourages campers to carry those habits outside of the camp.  Many campers choose to a keep a journal to record their progress and feelings about camp and fitness, so that they can look back on how far they have come once the camp session ends. You can try this at home.

2. Have Fun!

Summer camp is supposed to be about fun, and great weight loss camps always make sure that campers are always having a blast. With activities as diverse as kayaking, drama, swimming, billiards, horseback riding, and more, any kid with any interest can find a fun way to get physical.  The fun extends to the food selection as well. Successful weight loss camps always offer the kinds of foods that kids love, like pita pizza, cereal, and tater tots, while still keeping everything low calorie by making smart decisions about the food is prepared and selected. The best camps often teach these healthy food preparation and selection techniques so they can use them at home.

3. Get Support

Counselors aren’t the only ones encouraging campers to make smart choices about the foods they eat and the activities they engage in. They are taught and encouraged to support each other. This peer dynamic is often dramatically different than what many campers are used to, such as the school setting where students can sometimes cruel and mocking. This support system can make kids much more excited about losing weight. Every lost pound isn’t just a step towards a healthier life, it’s a victory that campers can happily report to their new friends. Making friends at camp, seeking out support in your local community, and finding new friends with similar goals will help you keep on track with your weight loss goals.

4. Set & Keep Goals

Counselors always emphasize the wonderful benefits of a healthy lifestyle, such as more energy, a better self-image, and greater lifelong health. Campers can then choose which goal they value the most, and always keep this mind as they slim down. These goals are something campers can take with them outside of the camp. Once they are again tempted by sugary sodas and french fries, they can strengthen their willpower by remembering and keeping the health goals they acquired. Setting short and long term goals will help keep you motivated.

5. Get Educated

When you learn what you are actually putting in your body when you eat greasy food and the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle, it is tremendously motivating to make the right decisions. Kids and young adults learn nutrition, healthy food choices, and the biological benefits of exercising. Understanding the difference between healthy and unhealthy decisions and the impacts of these decisions help overweight kids stay motivated to lose weight.

Welcome to Camp Pocono Trails!

Our commitment to helping kids and teens lose weight takes another big step at Camp Pocono Trails. We have created a blog to share success of stories of past campers, information about our summer weight loss camp, and healthy diet and fitness tips that can be used year round.

You may have seen our camp featured on MTV’s hit ‘Return to Fat Camp’. We had a blast working with MTV but the kids are the reason we’re in business. The show may have labeled us as a fat camp but we consider ourselves a healthy fitness camp where kids have fun, lose weight, and gain self esteem.

Our on-site director, Tony Sparber, founded New Image Camps with his wife, Dale, in 1991. Tony’s combination of discipline and compassion has helped thousands of kids and teens fight the battle against obesity. Helping kids achieve their potential by learning healthy lifestyle choices and gaining self esteem is Tony’s lifelong commitment.

Stay tuned for valuable tips, camp information, and guest blog posts from some of our past guests and Tony himself!
