While a “fat camp” sounds like a good idea, the term we prefer is a “health and fitness camp.” It is true that obesity has reached epidemic rates in the United States while at the same time, women are bombarded with media images of the ideal female body, and men to although to a lesser extent. Often, these images are simply unrealistic.
It is very important that when addressing a person’s weight loss issues, that we frame the intervention in a positive manner. This is why we don’t use the term “fat camp” but instead focus on health, self-esteem, and overall well-being.
Why the Term “Fat Camp” Should be Avoided
Parents who seek a fat camp should know that framing the issue in a negative manner can be detrimental to your child’s psychological development. Self-esteem is an important determinant of adolescent development and mental health.
Academic studies have shown that one out of every three girls have a distorted interpretation of her appearance. Researchers have found that obesity is the most strongly correlated physical issue with low self-esteem in prepubescent girls.
Other issues that correlate with obesity in girls include family stress, sedentary behavior, higher rates of screen time, and school bullying.
