Fat Camp vs. Weight Loss Camp
A “fat camp” in Rhode Island describes a summer camp experience for adolescents, teens, and young adults striving to get in shape and lose weight for good. Campers in attendance may be struggling with obesity, body image issues, or self-esteem concerns due to their weight. We chose to use the phrase “weight loss camp” over “fat camp” at Camp Pocono Trails. Calling a child “fat” can be hurtful and make the child rebel against the program. While we do use the term “fat camp” on this page, we are much better described as a weight loss program. Our program strives to be 100% positive in all aspects.
Our fat camp gets a lot of campers from Rhode Island. So many in fact that we made this page just for you! Rhode Island families find a home away from home at Camp Pocono Trails. Without a doubt your child will find other campers from Rhode Island and make fast friends. We accommodate campers from Rhode Island every year.
The food is prepared in a healthy way to minimize sugars and fats. For example, instead of fried chicken, it is grilled. An assortment of vegetables and fruits are available at every meal. Along with eating healthy at every meal each camper attends diet and nutritional classes. They learn how to read food labels and they learn how to substitute favorite unhealthy foods for healthy foods that satisfy the same cravings. Reasonable portion sizes are encouraged. Rhode Island teens learn that a healthy lifestyle is about making healthy food choices and staying active.

When Can I Go to a Fat Camp?
It’s important to register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. Every summer we have 700 or more campers in attendance. It is truly first-come, first served. We can’t possibly make room for everyone who wants to attend, but we will try to accommodate your family’s needs.
Most weight loss camps for kids and teens are offered during the summer months when students are not at school. Programs typically run for two-week or longer sessions, and Camp Pocono Trails allows participants to stay for multiple sessions in a row. The longer campers stay in a program, the more weight they are likely to lose.
We do create custom sessions for families with a busy summer schedule. We can add on days, or start your session on a different day than listed. However, if you wish to create a custom session you need to contact our camp admissions office ASAP.
Many parents ask, “What is the ideal session length?” This is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Many younger campers go for a shorter amount of time while older campers tend to stay for many weeks or even a full summer.
Sometimes parents sign up for an early session then extend the session length for the child once they see substantial return on their investment. Either way, it is recommended that you submit your initial deposit and register for the earliest possible time to ensure your child gets in the best physical and mental shape of their life this summer.
