Summer Fat Camp Awaits Oregon Teens!

Fat Camp vs. Weight Loss Camp

A “fat camp” in Oregon describes a summer camp experience for adolescents, teens, and young adults striving to get in shape and lose weight for good. Campers in attendance may be struggling with obesity, body image issues, or self-esteem concerns due to their weight. We chose to use the phrase “weight loss camp” over “fat camp” at Camp Pocono Trails. Calling a child “fat” can be hurtful and make the child rebel against the program. While we do use the term “fat camp” on this page, we are much better described as a weight loss program. Our program strives to be 100% positive in all aspects.

Our fat camp gets a lot of campers from Oregon. So many in fact that we made this page just for you! Oregon families find a home away from home at Camp Pocono Trails. Without a doubt your child will find other campers from Oregon and make fast friends. We accommodate campers from Oregon every year.

On-site staff is experienced and licensed. There is at least 4-5 site registered nurses at all times. Our commitment to your teen’s health extends to providing licensed children’s guidance counselors and social workers to run the Cognitive Behavior Therapy program (CBT) and self-esteem programs. We hand pick our staff and many of our staff have been with us for at least ten years.

Any camp can help a camper lose weight just by providing a lot of activity and structured portions at meals.  At Camp Pocono Trails, we focus on transferring these skills back home so that the changes stick.  This is why we offer culinary and nutrition classes instead of just feeding campers reduced-calorie meals.

Please check out our Transformations page or look at our reviews online.  Camp Pocono Trails is the leading weight loss camp in the United Oregons for a reason.  Give us a call at 1-800-365-0556 to discuss your weight loss goals.

What’s the Typical Day at a Fat Camp?

From the moment we wake up, campers are on the move at Camp Pocono Trails. We make activity fun. We realize not everyone is excited to wake up and start the day with physical activity, so we use group support of friends young people make in their cabin to support and encourage each-other to try out everything.

Every day will consist of a combination of low-calorie meals, fun exercise activities and games, and classes designed to help campers learn skills to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle upon returning home. While children may be reluctant to be away from home for multiple weeks, Camp Pocono Trails and our experienced staffers understand how to combat homesickness and keep kids busy.

Campers wake up at 7:45 am and participate in multiple “activity periods” per day. Every camper gets to try most, if not all activities at camp. Some activities are optional like our challenge course or zip lines. Favorite activities often include swimming, wake boarding, tubing, golf and Zumba class.

Activity periods extend through the day. Campers also participate in nutrition and optional self-esteem classes. We do a fun activity in the evening like skits, drama activities, and more. Lights go out from 10 to 10:30 pm depending on the camper’s age.

When Can I Go to a Fat Camp?

It’s important to register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. Every summer we have 700 or more campers in attendance. It is truly first-come, first served. We can’t possibly make room for everyone who wants to attend, but we will try to accommodate your family’s needs.

Most weight loss camps for kids and teens are offered during the summer months when students are not at school. Programs typically run for two-week or longer sessions, and Camp Pocono Trails allows participants to stay for multiple sessions in a row. The longer campers stay in a program, the more weight they are likely to lose.

We do create custom sessions for families with a busy summer schedule. We can add on days, or start your session on a different day than listed. However, if you wish to create a custom session you need to contact our camp admissions office ASAP.

Many parents ask, “What is the ideal session length?” This is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Many younger campers go for a shorter amount of time while older campers tend to stay for many weeks or even a full summer.

Sometimes parents sign up for an early session then extend the session length for the child once they see substantial return on their investment. Either way, it is recommended that you submit your initial deposit and register for the earliest possible time to ensure your child gets in the best physical and mental shape of their life this summer.

Better than a “Fat Camp”

The direct link between obesity and self-esteem has been well established. For teens and young adults especially, we see a correlation with low self-esteem, depression, disordered eating, anxiety, social isolation and more. Using the term “fat” or “fat camp for teens and young adults” only reinforces with young teens and young adults that something is wrong with them and that they are not living up to this idealized body image that the media portrays.
