New Mexico Teens go to fat camp at Camp Pocono Trails

Located in Pennsylvania, many New Mexico teens are getting fit and having fun at Camp Pocono Trails fat camp!

What is a Fat Camp?

A “fat camp” is the common name for an all-inclusive weight loss summer camp for kids, teens, and young adults.  At Camp Pocono Trails we prefer the term “weight loss camp” as it’s a more accepting term that better describes the end result our campers are seeking. While as parents we might think we are being helpful telling our child what is wrong with them, it’s rarely helpful to hurt their feelings. Probably, your child already knows if they are overweight. They are more likely to get on board with a program that is termed a “weight loss camp” versus a “fat camp” in New Mexico.

At our fat camp for New Mexico campers, we get so many campers from New Mexico that we decided to create this page just for parents, teens, and young adults from New Mexico. Many parents drive to Camp Pocono Trails, and we can also pick up your child from major airports in our area. But you can rest assured that we get many campers from New Mexico that your child will build friendships and feel right at home.

We are better than a fat camp for teens and young adults in that our approach is positive in every aspect. We don’t call our campers “fat” or blame them for any physical issues. Instead, we focus on solutions as a results-oriented, positive weight loss program for teens and young adults.

If you are searching for a “fat camp” for teens and young adults, you will find no better alternative than Camp Pocono Trails. Most of our campers are overweight and need to start with the very basics of exercise and nutrition. However, some of our campers are more advanced physically, socially, and emotionally and simply need to learn how to manage healthy habits independently so that they can transfer successfully into adulthood.

It is our experience that campers leave “walking on air” because of the positive interactions they’ve had at camp. Consider this: what other experience could you pay for that will absolutely ensure your child will have corrective interactions that result in success. Certainly, you couldn’t do this on a vacation, or a contained environment like a cruise ship.  Even going to a regular camp your child is not guaranteed to form healthy habits.

Are Fat Camps Evidence-Based?

Fat Camps are weight loss camps specifically designed for the physical and emotional support of adolescents, teens, and young adults. At Camp Pocono Trails we provide a structured environment for kits to have corrective experiences so that they can experience weight loss success. Losing weight is difficult, and we provide the structure needed for proper education, nutrition, fitness, culinary training, and motivation to live at a healthy weight. The long-term results of Camp Pocono Trails are astounding. Our weight loss camp is so effective because we hire the top staff in their respective fields from across the globe. Some campers may struggle with exercising, while others may struggle with eating right or developing the psychological motivation to change. At Camp Pocono Trails we have staff to focus on all of these areas.

What’s the Typical Day at a Fat Camp?

From the moment we wake up, campers are on the move at Camp Pocono Trails. We make activity fun. We realize not everyone is excited to wake up and start the day with physical activity, so we use group support of friends young people make in their cabin to support and encourage each-other to try out everything.

Every day will consist of a combination of low-calorie meals, fun exercise activities and games, and classes designed to help campers learn skills to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle upon returning home. While children may be reluctant to be away from home for multiple weeks, Camp Pocono Trails and our experienced staffers understand how to combat homesickness and keep kids busy.

Campers wake up at 7:45 am and participate in multiple “activity periods” per day. Every camper gets to try most, if not all activities at camp. Some activities are optional like our challenge course or zip lines. Favorite activities often include swimming, wake boarding, tubing, golf and Zumba class.

Activity periods extend through the day. Campers also participate in nutrition and optional self-esteem classes. We do a fun activity in the evening like skits, drama activities, and more. Lights go out from 10 to 10:30 pm depending on the camper’s age.

When Can I Go to a Fat Camp?

It’s important to register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. Every summer we have 700 or more campers in attendance. It is truly first-come, first served. We can’t possibly make room for everyone who wants to attend, but we will try to accommodate your family’s needs.

Most weight loss camps for kids and teens are offered during the summer months when students are not at school. Programs typically run for two-week or longer sessions, and Camp Pocono Trails allows participants to stay for multiple sessions in a row. The longer campers stay in a program, the more weight they are likely to lose.

We do create custom sessions for families with a busy summer schedule. We can add on days, or start your session on a different day than listed. However, if you wish to create a custom session you need to contact our camp admissions office ASAP.

Many parents ask, “What is the ideal session length?” This is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Many younger campers go for a shorter amount of time while older campers tend to stay for many weeks or even a full summer.

Sometimes parents sign up for an early session then extend the session length for the child once they see substantial return on their investment. Either way, it is recommended that you submit your initial deposit and register for the earliest possible time to ensure your child gets in the best physical and mental shape of their life this summer.
